This time of year in the US, most of us are consumed with buying the perfect toys for our children, finding the most adorable holiday outfits and decorating our homes to be the perfect backdrop for childhood memories. But those things aren’t essential for a happy childhood, are they? One of the things that struck us in Cambodia was how often we saw kids playing with makeshift toys – things made out of old water bottles, or string, or sticks, or a plastic bag. In this picture, my husband is showing some kids how to juggle using some small rocks, and they’re obviously fascinated.

These kids will be just fine without the toys, fashionable clothing, and scheduled activities that our kids take for granted, but what they do need is an education and a healthy diet (almost 50% of kids in Cambodia are malnourished).
